Muse – The resistance album review

Yes, we do listen to Rock over here too !
The wait was worthwhile and our patience paid off. Muse presented last September its 6th album and man was I happy to listen to it ! Actually it’s been on repeat on and off for over a week alongside my electronic sets on my playlist, however it’s been on non stop repeat on my colleagues player at work.
As I mentioned it in the above paragraph, the overall feeling of the album is surprising, but a happy surprise. As a matter of fact, it’s melodic and symphonic and different from the previous albums we might have heard of Muse. “Showbiz” was darker and more saturated, “Origin of Symmetry” was the album that introduced me to Muse and I found it quite weird at first back then, theatrical maybe. However this edition grasped me from start to finish as every track has its universe and its bag of surprises.
“The resistance” is a complex melt down of heavy buildups and classical references making the output a researched and intriguing to the ear. The oriental and gypsy scales were on Rendez vous and gave the spice to the overall feel of the album. Needless to mention the power of the lyrics proning freedom of mind, soul and heart. Every track is rich with ideas and musical wonders, from riffs, to main beats and styles. It’s not only a Rock targeted album but a multi genre audience, be it Electronic, Rock or Classical-Rock.
- “Uprising” opens up the way to the album, with an ear catching Rock steady beat and a Michel Jarre like synth riff. The lyrics are a direct message for freedom of mind. An A+ opening.
- “Resistance” combines sweet and heavy worlds into one track, with a heavy pad drawning you into a sea of memories, the 80′s like over-echoed-reverbed Piano versus the saturated ending.
- “Undisclosed Desires” is one of my favorite tracks with its Electro Funk and Hip Hop approach. A+ for the multi-layered vocals, pizzicato and the bass slaps !
- “United States of Eurasia” is very interesting melodically and musically, the chords buildups is very interesting and ear catching, there’s a Queen thing to this track.
- “Guiding light” wants to be Grandiose with the minimalist beat and the clear reverbed snare. It has something of a Keane/U2 meeting Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” riff and approach to it.
- “I belong to you” is a fun track, uplifting, melodic and Pop-ish. Having seen Muse’s interview on Taratata earlier this week with the explanation over the French part being a retranscript of a popular Mezzo-Soprano Opera by Camille Saint-Saens, Samson et Dalila. Matthew had a hard time with the pronunciation of the sentences, but he did it. Big ups !
- Exogenesis, WOW, Overture is just mind blowing, a movie score by its own. I love this trip hop feel to it and how every progression fits perfectly and melts perfectly from one “scene” to another. This is the highlight of the album and a great way to end majestically this opus.
So here it is, go grab the album or listen to it on the Legal Streaming sites near you.
It’s a must listen to album.
